The state health department will soon bring in rules to stop sale of a commonly used fertilizer, cow dung powder, that mixes cow dung with hazardous and toxic chemicals, health minister Subramanian said on Friday.
The state will work with the agriculture department to moderate the sale of other fertilizers and rat poison. Tamil Nadu has recorded at least 15,000 cases of suicides 15,000 every year. “This is far higher compared to the 11,000 road accidents the state records. Analysis showed that 15% of people end their lives by hanging, many others consume rat poison and fertilizers. More recently, we are seeing people consuming cow dung powder. Doctors tell us that they find it extremely difficult to save patients who have consumed this powder because it contains hazardous and toxic chemicals,” he said.

The state will work with the agriculture department to introduce rules that will prevent display of rat poisons and sale of fertilizers to individuals.
